Energy Efficient Foot Mat Heater

The Problem With Portable Electric Heaters

Electric heaters used in most homes and offices in Australia are inefficient energy guzzlers.

They typically consume between 1,000 and 2,400 watts and fail to direct heat where it is needed most.

Oil column heaters sit there looking innocent, but actually consume a large amount of power. Much of the heat produced by oil column heaters is lost above the heater, rising to unoccupied areas of the room (ie. the ceiling).

Electric fan heaters, on the other hand, try to overcome this problem by forcing heat out horizontally across the room. This creates another problem: air movement promotes cooling, not heating. So, to counteract this cooling effect, these heaters need to consume a large amount of power to produce a useful amount of heat.

Next come the bar or panel radiator type heaters. In theory, these aren't as bad because they try to employ one of the most effective heating methods: radiant heat. But, their downsides include over-spec power consumption, significant fire hazard and the fact they never seem to last for more than one winter.

The Solution: Direct Radiant Heat

The solution to many of the woes described above is simple: deliver radiant heat directly to where it is needed (the occupants of a room).

After coming to this conclusion a few years ago we went in search of a foot mat heater that could be used at workstations or in front of the TV. We finally got our hands on one, but it cost $140.
